Ficus Nitida

$15.00$165.00

Ficus are probably the most popular privacy hedge used in Los Angeles and Southern California. Ficus are usually planted about 2 – 3 feet apart, in a row to create a fast growing privacy hedge to create a border, block a view, or reduce noise.  This is because they grow fast, straight upright, and are very easy to maintain. They’re evergreen, planted in a row to create a tall green wall that is always green. Although Ficus can grow 40 feet tall, its most often kept under 10 ft using an electric trimmer. Ficus have very large and invasive roots. If allowed to grow over 10 feet tall, ficus can damage concrete by uplifting pavements and tilting walls.

Ficus are usually spaced about 2-3 feet apart and kept under 10 feet tall. Ficus grow quickly and can grow 40 feet tall.

Ficus Nitida Plant Information and Care

Plant ficus nitida under the full sun and in soil that drains well. Water newly planted ficus deeply about twice per week until established. To create a clean formal hedge, use an electric trimmer.  Spring is the most important time to fertilize ficus plants. Use an all purpose fertilizers, such as granular plant food with a 15-15-15 NPK ratio. These slow release fertilizers often last for about 2 months. So reapply during the Spring and Summer growing season.

Ficus are best used to create a fast growing hedge when kept under 10 ft tall or where there is no hardscape or concrete nearby that can be damaged. There is also another commonly planted hedge known as Ligustrum Texana (Wax Leaf Privet). Ligustrum do not have invasive roots, and maybe more appropriate to grow large near concrete sidewalks and patios.
