Servings: 20
Simple Syrup Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 1 clove
- 2 slices of fresh ginger
- ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
Sangria Ingredients:
- 1 bottle dry red wine
- ½ cup apple brandy
- ½ cup simple syrup
- 1 honeycrisp or pink lady apple
- 6 fresh figs
- cinnamon sticks
Instructions:
Start by making the syrup. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 7-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves. Add in remaining ingredients and remove from the heat. Let the spices steep in the syrup until it is completely cool. Strain the syrup and discard the spices.
Now make the sangria. In a large pitcher, combine the wine, brandy, simple syrup, and fruit. Stir well and then refrigerate for at least 4 hours to allow time for the flavors to come out.
Pour the sangria into glasses with ice and slices of apples and figs from the pitcher. If desired, you can add a splash of seltzer. Finish by garnishing the glass with a cinnamon stick.
